Self-care for brain health

Self-care for brain health involves simple daily habits that support recovery, wellbeing, and mental clarity. Balancing movement, rest, sleep, nutrition, and mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and promote overall brain function. Small, consistent actions throughout the day can make a meaningful difference to how you feel and recover.

Move your body

  • Move throughout your day – movement is like medicine and any movement is helpful, even 10-15 minutes
  • Schedule exercise sessions to improve fitness, for example, walking, strength training, yoga, pilates, Tai chi
  • Balance your physical activity and rest for optimal brain health – be intentional about movement and rest & silence

Calm your mind and body

  • Incorporate regular practice of mindfulness and meditation
  • Structured silence – take time for this space. It can help reduce stress, calm racing thoughts and increase your concentration
  • A quiet room with low lighting, nature sounds and space to ‘be silent’ and rest can be helpful. Or try silent commuting (quiet time as you travel)
  • If you have a busy mind, try writing thoughts in a journal so you can ‘park’ them

Rest and sleep

  • Sleep – we need this to help clear toxins from our body. Aim for 7-8 hours sleep/night
  • Take brain breaks during your day – even if just 5-10 minutes. It is helpful to take breaks from technology regularly
  • Regular rest throughout the day may be needed

Nutrition

  • Healthy nutrition is important for your brain health
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet with wholefoods (avoid processed food and limit sugar)
  • Drink adequate water to stay hydrated

Enjoy the outdoors

  • Spend time in the outdoors and nature – research has shown that this helps mental health, reduces stress levels, and helps cognitive function
  • Do what brings you joy e.g. watch a sunrise, walk down the beach, relax in the garden

Holidays

  • Holidays – taking holidays can reset sleep patterns and increase positive emotions
  • This benefit to your brain health is a great reason to plan a holiday!
